The Gift of Light

December is always a joyous month. For some, the winter season has set with snow; for those in the south, a cool breeze refreshes the air, yet darkness falls earlier, no matter the geological location. Together, as one, light is the connector, albeit the foundation in which it is displayed. 

When I think of Chanukah and all the religious holidays of the winter season, the light is reminiscent of our hope, strength, and determination. For the Jewish community, the menorah's illumination reminds us of our perseverance, freedom, and the magic of miracles. 

Today, in 2022, we remain fragile yet stronger by the challenges we face. When our community bears witness to senseless hate, may that be the trigger to encourage us to shine brighter when darkness looms.  

 In the spring of 99’ Monsignor McMahon and I were united by our commonalities despite our religious differences. The very essence of our shared beliefs then, as it remains today, was rooted in respect and tolerance and affirming the gift of light. May such partnerships remind us of our strength when bonded with others of different faiths, particularly during the winter season. 

Look around you and look deep within your soul…yes, the Judaic values and the Jewish practices will keep us thriving in times of contention. Still, I ask you to connect with friends and family of other religions and share the simple joy of togetherness in blessing all the holiday lights in their various forms. May love be the joining force while learning of another’s spirituality from a place of care and respect. 

Let’s all be the example that unites and celebrates the brightness of the holiday season, which illuminates hope for all.
